Open Garden Squares Weekend
Transport For London’s Open Garden Squares Weekend takes place on the weekend of June 13 and 14, 2009. It offers visitors a rare opportunity to peer behind the walls of more than 190 of London’s private community gardens and squares ranging from historically important ones to traditional allotments through to contemporary and eco-friendly gardens.
For the second year, the event will be sponsored by Transport for London, who are encouraging visitors to walk to the event.
More than 20 new gardens are taking part for the first time, including the Tate Modern; British Museum and British Library as well as the allotments within Fulham Palace and Creekside in Deptford, who will be offering River Dipping sessions.
One ticket allows entry to all venues over the Weekend and will cost £6.75 in advance and £8 during the weekend. These can be bought from Advance ticket hotline 020 8347 3230, which is provided by Capital Gardens as well as Britain and London Visitor Centre on Lower Regent Street, and from selected gardens during the weekend.
Several of the gardens will offer activities for children and there will also be a cycle route around Bloomsbury and Hackney, as well as an organized cycle ride. The Garden Museum will be holding a Lavender Festival with Downderry Nursery.
The event is organised by the London Parks & Gardens Trust to raise awareness of the significant social, cultural, environmental and economic contribution that green open spaces make to the wellbeing and enjoyment of Londoners, as well as visitors to our capital. www.londongardenstrust.org
